Effect of Life Respect Programs for the Elderly on Depression, Suicidal Ideation and Psychological Well-being of elderly

Abstract
This study is intended to examine the effect of life respect programs for the elderly to improve the elderly people¡¯s mental health and to reduce their suicidal ideation. A questionnaire survey was conducted twice to form an initial and follow-up data set for 24 members of an experimental group, and 24 members of a control group who used the senior welfare centers and were desirous of participating in this program as the general home-living elderly from May 26 to October 9, 2009. The results were as follows; The level of depression in the experimental group decreased to 8.32 scores after the program from 10.33(F=11.095, p=0.002). The suicidal ideation of the control group was reduced to a 4.54 score from a 7.75 (F=5.555, p=0.023). Family relation increased to 30.92 post-programming from 27.88(F=4.841, p=0.033). Also, psychological
well-being was increased to 49.42 from 48.83(F=.159, p=0.692). Accordingly, it is the effective program of coping with geriatric depression, suicidal ideation, of improving family relation and the Each area of 6 sub-psychological items of the environmental mastery.
